COVID-19 Impact on the building industry

No doubt the pandemic has an impact in all our lives. I wanted to speak to the field of construction and specifically how the pandemic has affected the cost of goods and materials used to build or remodel or do any kind of project.

You’ve likely seen an increase in the cost for certain items since the pandemic started. And I’m writing this to inform any who are looking to do some remodeling or any other type of project where you or your contractor will need to purchase materials. Very simply put, a project that you did 5-10 years ago, if you did that same project today, it would cost about double what you paid years ago! It’s even changed so much in the last year.

So I hope before looking at any contractors estimate you please take that into consideration. Yes there are those contractors still out there just trying to rip people off. But the majority give you a reasonable bid. (But not all do the same quality of work either) And that price they give if it seems high it’s likely because of the affect of the pandemic and rising material costs. But here’s a tip to save some $…not all contractors do this but if you can work out terms to buy your own materials with your contractor and then he use them for the job, this could save you some $. Now there could be some other headaches doing this like buying the wrong materials and then having to pay the contractor to get the right materials and so on. But for smaller projects your contractor may provide you a list of materials and you go buy them. Our business has done that in the past for some clients. But it doesn’t work for everyone or in every circumstance.
